New Community Project is a small non-profit that Al has been involved with for 20+ years. A Learning Tour to Sudan in 2009 launched her love of travel and passion for supporting women-led and community-driven solutions to the world’s big challenges.

NCP’s mission is both simple and huge: to turn the world upside down by building a new community of justice and peace for our neighbors and respect for the earth. NCP’s programs focus primarily on women's education and economic opportunity; human rights; and environmental justice and climate change.

Maru-a-Pula (MaP) is a secondary school in Gaborone, Botswana. Fritz taught middle-school science there when he first met Al. Working with students at MaP is partially why Fritz is a pediatrician today.

MaP provides scholarships for tuition, room, and board for promising children from Botswana who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Scholarship recipients often come from rural villages like the ones Al lived in as a Peace Corps volunteer. Many are orphans. To the extent that a good education can change lives, MaP has taught numerous students on full-scholarship who have then gone on to top universities around the world.
